Sexual Medicine Q & A

What are common sexual disorders treated with sexual medicine?

At Quality of Life Medical & Research Center, the team address issues such as erectile dysfunction in men and female sexual arousal disorder in women.

Erectile dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction describes the inability to get or keep an erection and reduced sexual desire. Occasional sexual dysfunction isn’t a cause for concern, but chronic issues can indicate an underlying problem. Dr. McGettigan reviews your health and offers appropriate treatments so you can enjoy your sex life again. One treatment, GAINSWave®, involves using shockwave therapy to promote better erections and improved sexual performance.

Sexual arousal disorder

Women sometimes experience sexual dysfunction in the form of sexual arousal disorder. In this condition, a woman may still desire sex but can’t get aroused or maintain arousal during sexual activity, meaning lubrication and pleasure are diminished. Vaginal rejuvenation techniques stimulate the restoration of healthy vaginal tissue that’s more lubricated and strong, making sexual encounters more pleasurable and satisfying. Ask Dr. McGettigan about these sexual medicine options for women.

Hypoactive sexual desire disorder

Both sexes can also suffer hypoactive sexual desire disorder, which is an inhibited sexual desire. When men or women have a lack of sexual fantasies and desire for sexual activity, it can indicate a clinical condition that is treated with multiple strategies offered by Dr. McGettigan.

What are PRP injections for sexual health?

The injection uses platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy to overcome sexual dysfunction. PRP is derived from your own blood. A sample is drawn from your arm and treated to concentrate the platelet count. Platelets have enormous healing and growth factor-stimulating properties.

The PRP is then injected into a woman’s clitoris and the area between the urethra and vaginal wall. The growth factors in the treatment help heal tissue in the area to improve sexual wellness, clitoral sensitivity, urinary incontinence, and vaginal lubrication.

For men with erectile dysfunction, injections of PRP into the penis stimulate tissue and blood vessel growth. You’ll achieve better vascularity and hardness, and fewer symptoms of erectile dysfunction. The injection also enhances your size, form, and sensitivity.

How can hormone therapy help with sexual health?

As men and women age, decreases in sex hormones – estrogen for women and testosterone for men – can lead to problems with their sex lives. Women, especially at the time of menopause, can experience painful intercourse, decreased vaginal lubrication, and overall vaginal atrophy. Low testosterone can make men have trouble maintaining an erection and interfere with their sexual desire.

Dr. McGettigan provides BioTe® hormone therapy to help balance out your hormones. He first tests your levels to determine if you’d benefit and then, as a certified provider, inserts the pellets under your skin. The pellets deliver a consistent supply of natural hormones to restore your levels and help you feel like yourself again – especially sexually.
